Press Release Summary: Nationally, rapidly increasing substance abuse statistics

Press Release Body: In 1995, national surveys calculated that 22,662,000 Americans
had abused illicit or prescription drugs in the past year. By 2005, this figure had
rocketed to 35,041,000 - an increase of more than 12 million individuals. To place

City and Los Angeles being initiated into illicit or prescription drug abuse. That's
how many more people were using prescription or illicit drugs in 2005.

In 2005, drug and alcohol abuse sent nearly a million and a half people to emergency

Nationally, poisoning deaths, nearly all of which are attributed to drugs, are now
second only to motor-vehicle crashes as the cause of unintentional injuries. Between
1999 and 2004, national figures for drug poisoning deaths had increased more than 68
percent.
Adding to the misery is the price tag of this damage and death. Government estimates
place the cost of drug abuse and addiction at half a trillion dollars per year, or
about $1,650 per American.
