Press Release Summary: Nationally, rapidly increasing substance abuse statistics
mean that millions of American lives are being damaged or lost to illicit drug
abuse, prescription drug abuse, alcohol abuse or addiction, overdoses and substance
abuse-related accidents.

Press Release Body: In 1995, national surveys calculated that 22,662,000 Americans
had abused illicit or prescription drugs in the past year. By 2005, this figure had
rocketed to 35,041,000 - an increase of more than 12 million individuals. To place
that increase in some kind of context, imagine the entire populations of New York
City and Los Angeles being initiated into illicit or prescription drug abuse. That's
how many more people were using prescription or illicit drugs in 2005.

In 2005, drug and alcohol abuse sent nearly a million and a half people to emergency
rooms. Now imagine the entire population of Philadelphia, every man, woman and
child, lined up at the door of an emergency room, all suffering from urgent problems
related to their drug or alcohol abuse.

Nationally, poisoning deaths, nearly all of which are attributed to drugs, are now
second only to motor-vehicle crashes as the cause of unintentional injuries. Between
1999 and 2004, national figures for drug poisoning deaths had increased more than 68
percent.
Adding to the misery is the price tag of this damage and death. Government estimates
place the cost of drug abuse and addiction at half a trillion dollars per year, or
about $1,650 per American.

"Reclaiming American lives happens one person, one substance abuser, one addict or
alcoholic at a time," stated Ryan Thorpe, Director of Admissions at Narconon
Arrowhead. Narconon Arrowhead is one of the nation's leading drug and alcohol
rehabilitation centers, located in Canadian, Oklahoma. "More than half of those
admitted to treatment for substance abuse have been through one or more rehab
programs before.

"Therefore, we concentrate on dissolving the barriers they encountered that caused
them to fail in these earlier treatment programs," added Mr. Thorpe. "Cravings,
depression and guilt are the barriers to successful recovery. Whether a person has
been through other rehab programs or not, if these barriers are not successfully
eliminated without using substitute medications, failure in recovery is imminent. We
work with our clients for a period lasting three to four months, on average. Seven
out of ten of our graduates go on to enjoy living life free from substance abuse."

drug addiction with productive, enjoyable lives.
